Start a Dutch sentence with anything other than the subject — a time, a place, a whole clause — and the verb still has to come second, which pushes the subject behind it. English does this only in questions, so the instinct has to be built from scratch.
There is no reliable rule for which article a noun takes, and the choice does not stay put: it changes the adjective too, so een klein huis but een kleine tafel. Guessing wrong is the most persistent marker of a non-native speaker.
Opbellen, meenemen, aankomen — in a main clause the prefix detaches and travels to the end of the sentence, sometimes many words later. Learners keep the verb whole, which is understandable and immediately wrong.
The single hardest thing about learning Dutch in the Netherlands is getting anyone to keep speaking it with you. The AI stays in Dutch at your level for as long as you want, however slowly you get there.

The vocabulary is unusually familiar and the pronunciation is learnable, but the word order is genuinely different and the de/het split has no shortcuts. Most learners get to comfortable conversation faster in Dutch than in French or German, provided they actually speak it.
By exposure, not by rules. Roughly two thirds of nouns are de-words, all plurals are de, and most diminutives are het — beyond that it is repetition. Conversation practice is the fastest source of repetition, because the correction is attached to a sentence you meant.
